Grade the leaderboard and a simulation can feel unfair. A fair business simulation grading rubric rewards what students can control: their reasoning, use of evidence, conceptual accuracy, teamwork, and reflection. They cannot control every rival choice, and a plausible strategy can produce a weak result while a poor process happens to finish first.
Treat simulation performance as evidence to analyze rather than a direct measure of learning. You may include a small performance component when the objective genuinely involves execution, but define it across multiple measures and reward improvement or constraint management rather than first place. The rubric below is designed for a team simulation plus an individual reflection.
Decide what evidence the assignment will collect
Build the rubric only after defining the artifacts. A manageable set includes the following items.
- A strategy statement and selected-Round decision log.
- One evidence table or chart.
- A team analysis memo or presentation.
- An individual reflection.
Tell students which Round data is authoritative and how they may cite it. If you provide a CSV export, specify the relevant columns and units. If the simulation presents charts, ensure students can also access a table or text alternative.

This weighting gives 90 percent of the grade to intellectual work and 10 percent to team process and communication.
Criterion 1: Decision rationale and planning, 25 points
Award high marks when the team states a measurable objective, identifies relevant constraints, records assumptions, predicts an outcome, and chooses decisions consistent with that reasoning. A strong rationale might state that the team will hold price near the market average, increase production within capacity, and test whether fewer stockouts improve units sold without creating excess ending inventory.
Middle-level work names an objective without connecting every decision or measure. Weak work lists numbers, relies on "we wanted to win," or explains the choice only after results.
Do not grade whether the prediction was correct. Grade whether it was testable and grounded in the information available at the time. An incorrect prediction followed by disciplined learning is often better evidence than a lucky correct one.
Criterion 2: Use of simulation evidence, 25 points
Strong work cites accurate Round and Team Company data, compares relevant measures, and selects evidence that can support the claim. It may compare price and units sold across two companies, trace inventory and service over several Rounds, or reconcile project cash flow with financing and valuation.
Require at least two measures for any broad performance conclusion. "We improved" should identify what improved and what may have worsened. Students should distinguish percentage points from percent changes, revenue from profit, cash from accounting income, and forecast from actual demand.
Reduce marks for copied dashboard descriptions, unexplained screenshots, missing units, cherry-picked Rounds, or causal conclusions based only on a correlation. A polished chart is not evidence of understanding if the student cannot explain its variables and limitations.
Criterion 3: Conceptual accuracy, 20 points
Map this criterion to your course. In economics, you might assess elasticity, opportunity cost, market structure, and strategic interdependence. In marketing, assess segmentation, targeting, positioning, contribution, and willingness to pay. In operations, assess lead time, pipeline inventory, landed cost, capacity, and service. In finance, assess NPV, working capital, depreciation, leverage, dilution, and liquidity.
High-level work uses terms accurately and connects them to the scenario mechanism. Middle-level work is generally correct but incomplete. Weak work substitutes everyday language for the concept, confuses measures, or treats rank as proof of a universal principle.
Publish the specific concepts in advance. A generic "uses course theory" row is difficult for students to act on and difficult for multiple graders to apply consistently.
Criterion 4: Adaptation and reflection, 20 points
Reward students who identify a gap between prediction and result, propose a focused change, and explain which next observation would test it. Strong reflection also names a limitation such as simultaneous competitor changes, a binding capacity constraint, a delayed effect, or insufficient evidence to isolate a cause.
Include transfer. Ask where the reasoning would apply outside the simulated industry and what condition would make it fail. This prevents students from reporting only that a particular numeric price or supplier "worked."
An individual reflection is valuable even when most work is team-based. It shows whether each student can interpret evidence and reduces the risk that one team member produces the entire analysis.
Criterion 5: Team process and communication, 10 points
Assess observable practices, not personality. Useful evidence includes a rotating role record, concise decision log, peer confirmation of contribution, and the team’s ability to explain disagreement constructively. Do not reward confidence, speed, or presentation charisma as proxies for collaboration.
Keep peer evaluation low stakes and behavior-specific. Ask which tasks the student completed, how the team tested assumptions, and whether members had access to the decision process. Provide a way to report a serious participation issue privately.
Communication marks should emphasize clear claims, labeled units, legible tables, and answers supported by evidence. Accessibility is part of good communication. Visual material should have a meaningful text or table alternative.
Why leaderboard rank should carry little or no weight
Rank combines the team’s choices with the market created by other teams. It may also compress several outcomes into one metric. A company can lead Market Share while weakening cash, or create long-term value while ranking poorly in an early Round. Rewarding rank heavily can encourage price wars, excessive risk, collusion, or concealment of mistakes.
If operating performance is an objective, use a small balanced score with published thresholds for profit, liquidity, or improvement. Allow an evidence-based recovery memo to earn equivalent credit. This assesses management under constraints without letting classmates determine most of the grade.
Never change the scoring rule after seeing the leaderboard. Students should know the assessment contract before the first decision.
Calibrate the rubric before the course
Score two anonymized examples. One should have strong performance and weak reasoning. The other should have modest performance and strong analysis. If the first still earns more, adjust the rubric. Multiple graders should score the same sample and agree on evidence thresholds. The assessment should match the objectives and reasoning rehearsed in the debrief.

This prompt maps cleanly to the five rubric criteria. It also keeps the assignment about evidence and reasoning rather than a narrative recap of every Round.

Should a simulation be graded at all?
It can be ungraded practice, low-stakes participation, or a graded analysis. Match the stakes to the preparation, reliability of access, and evidence of individual learning. Avoid making a first unfamiliar Round a high-stakes assessment.
How do I handle a technical interruption?
Grade the reasoning students could demonstrate from saved decisions, prediction sheets, or a provided result set. Do not penalize a student for platform or network failure outside their control.
